The emergency medical community has been very proactive in the implementation of advanced cardiac life support. The advanced cardiac life support program has been very helpful for the resuscitation of many sudden cardiac arrest victims in the pre-hospital setting. There are other countries other than the US that is having greater success with the implementation of emergency cardiac care. As a result, the American Heart Association has made some preliminary changes to the ACLS algorithms. We see the anti-arrhythmic medication such as Lidocaine has taken a back seat to the new anti-arrhythmic Amiodarone. Europe has seen that this particular medication slows the calcium channels in relation to the myocardial cells which in return decreases the re-polarization time. Since re-polarization times are decreased, the probability of persistent ventricular tachycardia is also decreased as well. Also, the medication Vasopressin has made significant strides in relation to the old medication Epinephrine by increase in vascular tone which in return increases cardiac pre-load. The American Heart Association is also pushing for all medical institutions to be trained in advanced cardiac life support. The United States military is very proactive in the implementation of the advanced cardiac life support to all of their staff. We have noticed an increase in the individuals that are located outside of the US who are also having great success with the use of early defibrillation.
